What It Takes to Be a Successful Agent

If you are a real estate agent, you have probably asked yourself, How can I be successful in this field? Well, the answer is simple and clear. Treat your company the same way you would treat your own small business to achieve long-lasting success. If you can give your company the attention and care it deserves, success will likely come your way faster. Treating yourself like a business might sound tough, but it is not complicated. It makes it easier to find good opportunities regularly. Below is how you can bring value to a real estate company and develop yourself as a successful real estate agent.

Education and Training

A college degree is not mandatory to become a real estate agent, but education and training are necessary to build a solid foundation in this field. Agents must complete Dubai Real Estate Institution-certified training and pass a RERA exam. DREI Certified Training covers important topics such as the leasing process and rental agreements, code of ethics, and legal module, which is important to excel in this field.

Research and Share the Market Knowledge

To be a successful real estate agent, understand the housing market where you work. For example, what's happening in the UAE real estate market overall and in your city or town? Read real estate magazines and websites, visit properties in your area, research stats about prices, how many homes are available, and how long they typically stay on the market. For buyers, purchasing a home isn’t just about the home itself but also the surrounding area. What restaurants should they eat at? Are there parks or lakes to visit? What about nearby schools? Your clients trust you to know everything about their neighbourhood. Keeping up this reputation is easy when you show that you have done your homework.

Strong Determination

If asked to describe yourself in three words, would "determined" be one of them? As a real estate agent, you need to be determined to succeed. You can not accept defeat, but success also doesn't happen by chance. Every deal matters, and every client must be satisfied. You must be relentless and stubborn in ensuring your client gets what they want.

If determination isn't your strong trait, a career in real estate might not be for you. But if you are driven to succeed, even when faced with challenges (which sometimes come from clients), you will prosper in real estate.

Negotiation Skills

Most of the time, you will rely on your negotiation skills. You will need to be so good that you can teach a class on negotiation skills. As a real estate agent, you will need to negotiate about three main things:

  • The price for listing a property
  • The price for selling a property
  • The commission

Focus on learning how to negotiate, especially your commission, as that is the trickiest part. Once you develop the skill to negotiate a good commission, you will find it easy to negotiate on other real estate matters.

A Strong Network and Client Base

A strong network can provide valuable referrals, leads, and opportunities to help grow your business. Connect with other professionals in the industry, such as mortgage brokers, appraisers, and home inspectors. Join local real estate associations and attend networking events to meet potential clients and establish a professional relationship with them.

You can only be a successful real estate professional with connections because real estate is all about who you know and who knows you. There is one myth that you must be an extrovert to be good at networking. Actually, introverts are great at it, too, because they are good listeners and can engage in meaningful conversation. These are the basic skills which can make agents excellent networkers.

Make Yourself Available

As an agent, there might be a possibility that you would be working with five clients at a time. You can say goodbye to your profit if you struggle to pay attention to each client. Sometimes, you might not be able to answer your phone right away. But whenever you are available, make sure to respond to calls from current customers. If a customer calls, they are probably facing some problems. Sparing five minutes to address their concern and solve their problem will make you a hero.

It is equally important to observe or ask every client about their preferred method of communication. Do they prefer texts, voice notes, emails, or phone calls? Try to communicate with whoever they feel comfortable with using that medium. Clients will appreciate it when you personalise their experience and remember small details about them.

Things to Avoid

Don’t Choose this Profession for Money Alone

Understandably, we all work for money, and one can easily get tempted by the Dirhams, which come in the form of commissions in real estate. Having personal goals and the urge to live a quality life is good, but don’t compromise it with the work-life balance. Make sure to take breaks, handle stress, and understand when you need to slow down if the workload increases. Remember, it is not just about making money. Finding joy in what you do is equally important.

Don’t Rely on Referrals Only

Referrals are great, but you should depend on more than just them. Even if your clients love your work, it doesn’t mean they will refer new clients. To ensure your business keeps growing, you need other ways to find new leads and clients, such as email marketing, Google ads, social media marketing, attending networking events, and exploring innovative lead-generation ideas.

Don’t Ignore New Business

It is tempting to ignore new leads when you are on a busy schedule. But be careful not to do that. You never know when the next opportunity will come, so pay attention to new leads, even when things are hectic.

Final Words

To grow in real estate, you need to be organised, engage with your customers regularly, and know the market trends. When things don't go your way, you should be able to bounce back fast. How you handle rejection and failure affects your career. Most agents quit because they can't handle the pressure. To avoid that, discover your strengths, learn how to convert leads into sales, create a personal brand, and promote it in a way that connects with your target audience.
