Getting Around Dubai In 2023: Transportation and Costs

Dubai is a thriving city with towering skyscrapers, bustling neighbourhoods and loads to explore. But, knowing the best ways to navigate this bustling city can sometimes be a challenge. Whether you are planning a visit or moving to Dubai, it is important to know how to get around.

In this blog post, we will explore all the transportation methods in Dubai in 2023, including public transport options like buses, the metro and trams, as well as private options like ride-sharing and having your own car. We'll provide a breakdown of how much each method typically costs, as well as sharing some extra tips for getting around, equipping you with everything you need to know about transportation in Dubai.

Public Transportation

Buses

Dubai's bus network is crucial for both residents and tourists in the city. It forms a network of routes ensuring access to almost every part of the city. Buses typically operate from 4:00 AM to 1:00 AM, with some routes offering 24-hour service for late-night travellers.

Cost of Using Bus Services: Dubai's bus fare structure is simple and affordable, with prices starting at 3 AED per ride. This can be paid using a NOL card, an easy-to-use contactless smart card.

Dubai Metro

One of Dubai's standout transportation services is the Dubai Metro. This system comprises two lines, the Red line and the Green line, allowing you to travel over a vast area of the city.

Dubai Metro services run every few minutes and offer a reliable, fast and comfortable (all trains are air-conditioned) way to travel throughout Dubai. It is also an amazing way to experience stunning views of the city's skyline, particularly at night when the city lights up with an enchanting glow.

Ticket Options and Costs

There are various ticket options for travelling on the Dubai Metro. If you are just visiting Dubai, you could consider a one-day, weekly or monthly pass or a red ticket that just allows you to make a single journey. But, for those planning to use the Dubai Metro over the long term, the best option is to use a NOL card, which is an easy-to-use prepaid smart card.

The Dubai Metro network is divided into zones and the cost of your journey will depend on how many zones you travel through, as well as the type of ticket that you have. The Dubai Metro also offers two classes of travel, standard class and gold class. Gold class is more expensive, but offers riders a more comfortable environment including spacious individual seats.

Dubai Tram

The Dubai Tram is a popular mode of transport for those looking to travel along the city's picturesque coastline. The Dubai Tram connects Al Sufuoh, Palm Jumeirah and Media City with Dubai Marina, JLT and JBR. With accessible routes and operating hours that extend into the late hours, it is a wonderful way to explore this area.

From Monday to Saturday, it starts at 06:00 AM and ends at 12:24 AM. On Sunday, it starts at 09:00 AM and ends at 12:20 AM.

Ticket Prices: Tickets for the Tram are reasonable, starting at around 3 AED, and it goes up to 8 AED per zone. The tram is especially ideal for those who wish to explore the Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) area, known for its stunning beaches, sea views and vibrant atmosphere.

Taxis

In Dubai, taxis stand out as a seamless and adaptable mode of transportation, catering to both residents and tourists alike. With their distinctive bright-roofed design, these vehicles are easily recognisable and can be hailed from practically any street corner, or quickly booked using the Careem app. What sets Dubai's taxi services apart is the variety they offer: from the standard, air-conditioned cabs, perfect for quick trips around the city, to luxurious cars that ensure a comfortable and stylish ride.

Costs: Taxi fares are reasonable, with a starting fee of 12 AED and an additional charge of 1.97 AED per kilometre for standard, metre-based taxis.

Water Transportation

For a unique travel experience, consider using Dubai's water transport options, such as the traditional Abra boats. Abras provide an entirely different perspective of the city. They offer a peaceful journey along Dubai Creek, where you can admire the contrast between Dubai's old and new districts. The traditional Abras are an authentic mode of travel and give you a glimpse of what Dubai was like before its rapid modernization. There are also a number of ferry services, offering an alternate to typical road-based transportation methods.

Costs: The price for an Abra ride starts at just 1 AED per person, while ferry prices can vary depending on the route, with the average cost being around 50 AED per trip.

Pros and Cons of Public Transportation

Public transportation in Dubai offers several advantages, including its accessibility and its affordability relative to car ownership. But, the pros of public transportation in Dubai extend beyond just cost savings. It is also a more environmentally friendly way to explore the city. By using public transport, you are contributing to Dubai's sustainability efforts and reducing your carbon footprint.

However, public transportation can get crowded during rush hours, doesn't run 24/7 and routes can be limited, so private transportation methods can provide a faster, more flexible mode of transportation.

Private Transportation

Car Ownership

For many residents of Dubai, having a car is essential to giving them the flexibility to freely travel around the city, such as commuting to work and to leisure activities. For those living in Dubai for the long term, owning a car rather than renting can be much more cost-effective.

Costs Of Car Ownership

Additionally, some major roads in Dubai have toll gates. To pass through these gates, you'll need a Salik tag, available at petrol stations for AED 100. However, half of this amount serves as an initial credit added to your account. Each time you pass a toll gate, it costs AED 4.

Maintenance and Service Expenses

Keeping your car in good condition involves various costs including:

  • Car Wash: AED 20 - AED 60
  • Car Service: AED 350 – AED 500

Renting a car in Dubai is a quick and straightforward process, provided you have a UAE driver's license or a recognised overseas driver's license if you're new to Dubai and awaiting your Emirates ID.

The cost of hiring a car varies significantly depending on the company used, expected usage (monthly mileage allowance) and car chosen, but the cost typically starts from about AED 1,700 per month

Private Hire Cars

Uber and Careem are popular apps for booking private-hire vehicles in Dubai. They provide an excellent alternative to traditional taxis and are easy to use.
